Everything that’s part of the OFML world – explained here.
Starting Point
OFML – OFFICE FURNITURE MODELING LANGUAGE
OFML was developed on behalf of the German Office Furniture Industry Association (Industrieverband Büro und Arbeitswelt e. V., IBA) but is freely available to other industries as well. The standard enables a comprehensive description of all aspects of a product that should be taken into account in a planning and configuration system. It includes:
- Planning logic
- Graphical/geometrical data
- Commercial data (prices, product descriptions)
- Configuration-relevant data (features, feature values, and their relationships)
OFML allows for the import of geometrical data from external CAD systems and includes product data management functionality, enabling the integration of core product data (commercial and configuration-relevant information) from external databases.
For detailed information on this data format, see Specifications
Core Elements
OCD – OFML COMMERCIAL DATA
OCD is both a further development and a component of the OFML data standard. It is used to define product data needed and exchanged in furniture trade business processes. OCD primarily supports:
- Configuration of complex items
- Price calculation
- Provision of information for quotes and order forms
- Support for statistics and delivery control
OCD functionally corresponds to and expands upon the former proprietary format known as the Electronic Price List (EPL).
Details on this data format can be found under Specifications
ODB – OFML DATABASE (GRAPHICS DATABASE)
ODB enables the description of both geometrical and – to a limited extent – logical properties of planning objects. Its aim is to provide a structure that can be written, read and validated for consistency with relative ease from a programming perspective.
Key elements of ODB include:
- Geometry tables (separate for 3D and 2D)
- Tables for attachment points
- Function tables
Details on this data format can be found under Specifications
OEX – OFML BUSINESS DATA EXCHANGE
OEX is an XML-based format for describing order-related data.
OEX consists of the OEX-GLOBAL document, Orders (OEX-ORDERS), Order Responses (OEX-ORDRSP), and Order Changes (OEX-ORDCHG).
Details on this data format can be found under Specifications
Additional Terms
EPL – ELECTRONIC PRICE LIST
A proprietary commercial data format and predecessor of OCD. Used in conjunction with FOS.
FOS – FACILITY OPEN STANDARD
An older data standard with a focus on graphics, replaced by OFML.

An industry-specific library of simple and more complex behavioural patterns that can be directly integrated into the ODB. Part of the OFML standard.
MD – METADIALOGUE
OFML extension (advanced data standard).
MP – METAPLANNING
OFML extension (2D planning behaviours and logic).
